The Need for Supplementation
In an ideal world, there would be no need for anyone to supplement their diets with the inclusion of nutritional supplements. The unfortunate reality is that the majority of people's diets are deficient is some nutrients.
Micro-Nutrient Deficiencies
More often than not, it is the micro-nutrients that are not obtained in sufficient quantities. There are a number of reason for this:
Firstly, we are seeing an increasing trend where individuals are taking in less and less quantities of fruit and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables provide us with many of the essential minerals, vitamins and antioxidants that the body needs to function properly and protect itself from Free Radical Damage.
Secondly, the fruit and vegetables that we do purchase and consume are not always of the highest quality and hence, some of the nutritional value is lost. This is due to the time delay between the picking or harvesting of the fruit or vegetables and the time when it finally reaches the consumer. Many nutrients are also lost during the cooking process, so the product we eventually eat is inferior to the product that was taken from the source.
Thirdly, people today have a greater demand for these particular micro-nutrients than people did many years ago. The level of harmful pollutants in the atmosphere, lifestyle choices and even day to day stress will affect an individuals need for vitamins and antioxidants due to increased levels of free radicals within the body. Free radicals are also produced during any metabolic activity (chemical reactions within the body), so greater quantities of free radicals are created during heavy exercise.
If free radicals are not removed then they can contribute to the development of Degenerative Disease such as heart disease, strokes and cancers. The role of micro-nutrients (in particular antioxidants) within the human body is to safeguard our cells against Free Radical Damage.
