Activity for Basic Health Benefits

In 1995 the English National Physical Activity Guidelines were set out. It was recommended that in order to achieve basic health benefits, 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity should be carried out at least 5 times per week. Moderate intensity activity is classified as anything from walking, cycling or swimming to climbing the stairs, playing a sport and even cleaning or gardening. In addition, the 30 minutes of activity can be accumulated throughout the day, so it can be easily incorporated into people's lives (e.g. cycle to work, use the stairs, cycle home, walk to the shop, etc.).

The guidlines outlined above are recommended for sedentary individuals looking to improve their general level of health. More information on improving general health is provided in the Health Information section.

Many people prefer to use formal exercise as a means of improving their fitness, body shape and / or state of mind and well-being. In the Exercise Information section I have provided additional information that will assist you in achieving your health and fitness related goals with respect to formal exercise.
